It’s time to start thinking about the writing marathon!

<— It’s true. I won one of these puppies last year at the 2007 Muskoka Novel Marathon! My favourite kind of chair. Up here, we call them Muskoka chairs… but I have it on good authority that below the border they are mostly known as Adirondack chairs. Whatever. It’s the most comfortable chair in the universe.

Last year I took the 2007 Best Adult Novel Award in the Muskoka Novel Marathon. I’m still trying to get the damned thing published, but that’s another story. The whole point of the marathon is to raise awareness and funds for literacy. There’s a great wrap up article on the 2007 event at the Muskoka Literacy Council site. I just found the article this past week.

With the spring thaw MOSTLY over, I thought it was time to throw another mention of the marathon out there, in the hopes of finding new participants for the coming marathon. July may seem like a long time away, but it really isn’t.

All writers are welcome to the event. You can do either the 48hr or the 72hr event. You can stay in your seats the entire marathon… or go to a nearby hotel for a break. The only thing that is expected of you is that you raise some sponsorship for yourself prior to attending. Last year the 26 writers who attended raised a combined total of $4,225.00 for the council. If you are interested in learning more, you can read below. Susan Lowe is the president of the Muskoka Literacy Council and looks after the registrations.

There is nothing better than putting your bum in chair (b.i.c.) for 48hours and JUST WRITING. It’s an amazing trip. You do it for yourself and you do it for those who can’t do it. The writing is for you and you will be quite thankful you did it. The funds are to help the council help others achieve literacy.

Plans for the Muskoka Novel Marathon 2008 are in progress. Please mark July 11-14 on your calendars. There will be both a 2-day and a 3-day event like last year. A request has been made for the same venue with plans to make an effort to do more team building at the beginning of it so that writers have a chance to mingle more and to get to know one another better.

Packages are almost ready to be sent out. For more information, please contact Susan at lowes.atthefarm@sympatico.ca.

If you are interested in donating to the council and cannot make it to the marathon or sponsor someone who is going to the marathon, you can always contact Susan at the above email address. They would love the support.

Do yourself a favour and come up to Huntsville, Ontario this July 11-14.
